Job Title: Water Meter Reader
Location: Hillsboro, OR
Duration: 3–6 Months (Temp-to-Hire)
Driving Requirement: Will be operating a city-provided vehicle
A temporary opportunity is available for a Water Meter Reader to perform manual and general work associated with meter reading and maintenance. The role includes reading residential and commercial water meters, recording usage data, handling service orders, maintaining meter boxes, assisting with repairs, and providing in-field customer service.
Key Responsibilities:Accurately read water meters and record data into a handheld device.
Complete service orders for connections, disconnections, and re-reads.
Inspect meters for damage or malfunction and report issues like leaks or tampering.
Connect/disconnect water service for customer requests or billing compliance.
Maintain meter areas by clearing obstructions and replacing lids as necessary.
Provide door tags and communicate clearly with utility customers.
Perform basic maintenance and safety checks on assigned equipment.
Collaborate with utility billing and water departments to deliver positive customer service.
Ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulations.
Maintain accurate records in accordance with data retention and management policies.
Understanding of vehicle operation laws and safe driving practices.
Familiarity with water utility systems and equipment used in meter reading.
Ability to read and interpret consumption data accurately.
Basic math and record-keeping skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with diverse populations.
Capacity to work independently, manage time effectively, and resolve issues in the field.

Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
Outdoor fieldwork, exposed to varying weather conditions.
Considered a Safety-Sensitive position.
Physical activities include walking, kneeling, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and repetitive motion.
Exposure to mechanical parts, dust, fumes, uneven terrain, noise, and occasional travel.
Must be able to perform medium work as defined by physical demand standards.
Pre-employment screenings are required and include a driving record check, drug screening, and physical exam. A CDL is not required, but a valid driver’s license is mandatory.
