Waste Services

VLS Waste Services provides customized waste processing solutions for hazardous and non-hazardous industrial and commercial waste, including landfill diversion and sustainability programs, solidification of liquid waste, recycling, wastewater treatment, and waste sequestration.

Railcar Services

VLS Railcar Cleaning and Repair Services division provides specialty cleaning services for difficult-to-clean products, including chemicals, hardened materials, and pressurized gases, and comprehensive repair services for certified full-service repairs, tank car qualifications, and maintenance.

Marine Services

VLS Marine Services division offers state-of-the-art barge cleaning, repair, and gas-free facilities for various chemical solvents and downstream petroleum products.

Requirements:

The Waste/Recycling National Approvals Specialist will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the inbound and outbound waste/recycling profiles for all assigned facilities. The selected candidate will be a member of the EHS team and will be expected to lead by example, following all Corporate EHS policies and procedures.

Job Duties

  • Review and approval of submitted profiles for potential waste streams to be shipped to VLS facilities.
  • Coordination of profiles for wastes and recyclable streams shipped outbound from VLS facilities.
  • Auditing of third-party disposal and recycling facilities.
  • Review and confirm waste manifests, shipping documents, as well as certificates of disposal, recycling, and destruction.
  • Act as the main interface for the commercial team in the evaluation of new business opportunities.
  • Coordinate with facility managers when questions arise as to compatibility of different waste streams to comingle as well as to acceptability of certain waste streams for specific outbound outlets.
  • Work with the customer service team to ensure appropriate pricing on inbound waste streams.
  • This is a national role and will be responsible for approvals into all waste facilities within the system.
  • Provide backup to Director of Environmental on permitting and site compliance issues.
  • Coordinate with other regional approvals specialists when problem streams arise.
  • QA/QC other regional approvals processes.
  • Occasionally assist with specific regional reporting and compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with significant coursework in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or other engineering/science discipline.
  • Three to seven years' experience in the EHS field, with an emphasis in the areas of waste and wastewater management through either on-the-job training or coursework.
  • Manifesting and profiling hazardous and non-hazardous waste experience required.
  • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, an associate's degree along with significant (7-10+ years) and relevant work experience in the EHS field;
  • Knowledge of chemical incompatibilities and ability to recognize indicators of unstable chemicals through visual inspection or through analysis of safety data sheets and take the appropriate response actions.
  • RCRA, DOT, and State regulatory compliance experience required.
  • Some travel will be required to satisfy the requirements of the position – 25% or less.
  • Excellent communication skills for interactions with outside customers and inside customers.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellence in the areas of:

  • Waste profiling processes.
  • Experience in regulatory data entry (ex. E-manifest, TX-STEERS data entry/reporting) or ability to learn systems.
  • Knowledge of the waste/recycling industries in the United States.
  • Experience with national, state, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and execute within established deadlines.
  • Written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Intermediate to expert-level knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access).
