Job Description

Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory boarding and day school with enrollment of 770 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California . The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Divisions Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson is a mission-driven school that aims to help students shape joyful lives while instilling a passion for learning and achievement to prepare them for success in school and beyond.

Stevenson is home to vibrant visual and performing arts programs including drawing, painting, ceramics, choral music, dance, band, rock band, jazz band, musical theater and drama. The Pebble Beach campus includes two performing arts venues, the larger of which, Keck Auditorium, has seating capacity in excess of four hundred.

Stevenson School is seeking a Director of Technical Theater to start July 1, 2025. 

The Director of Technical Theater (DTT) holds primary responsibility for the creation of scenic, lighting, and sound designs for all Keck Auditorium activities and performances. An important part of the role is the shepherding of students in their acquisition of production knowledge and the skills to be able to design and build sets, lighting and sound systems. With the opening of the new Math, Science, and Engineering Center (MSEC) in April 2026, there will be an opportunity to leverage the new makerspace and woodshop for set construction and other technical opportunities.

This is a full-time position based on the Pebble Beach Campus. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Create, oversee and execute scenic, lighting, and sound designs 
  • Supervise student production crews for three seasons
  • Collaborate effectively with all arts faculty and colleagues from other areas of the School to stage theater productions and other performing arts and school events
  • Support for a winter musical that uses student actors, musicians and technicians                                                                                                                        
  • Manage the performing arts calendar and usage of the performing arts spaces
  • Ensure quality execution of all technical elements during myriad gatherings in Keck Auditorium
  • Provide general A/V support in additional campus spaces
  • Purchase all physical equipment for the theater program in conjunction with the director of theater and with approval of the arts department chair
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with pertinent developments in technical theater at the professional and educational levels
  • Embrace opportunities to grow the program through expanded technical theater classes, creating curriculum and a scope and sequence in which students can develop technical theater skills
  • Cultivate community partnerships and attend local theater events 
  • Assign and supervise students in the production booth and in the creation of scenic, lighting, costume, and sound designs for student projects
  • Coordinate and train student stage managers
  • Maintain all theatrical equipment (lights, dimmers, sound and light boards, props, and tools), coordinate repairs and anticipate needs for equipment replacement
  • Oversee quality control and maintain safety standards in all theater spaces
  • Maintain workshop and backstage areas
  • Oversee and coordinate the rental or lending of School-owned theatrical properties and scenery to individuals or theaters; coordinate with the Business Office all external rentals of Keck Auditorium and support spaces
  • Provide technical support to all visiting artists who perform in Keck Auditorium
  • Manage all technical theater budgets 
  • Other duties as assigned
 

Required Qualifications:

  • A BFA or an MFA in Theatrical Design and/or Technical Theatre or related or the equivalent professional experience
  • Meaningful experience troubleshooting and solving technical theater issues
  • Excellent organizational ability and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and the ability to keep all constituencies appropriately informed and on schedule
  • Outstanding technical skills with relevant sound, lighting and set design tools and equipment
  • Extensive experience in production venues
  • Experience in an education setting is a significant plus
  • High level user capability with and the ability to teach students to use software platforms and applications used in theater tech
  • Well-versed in safety guidelines for educational sceneshop as outlined by OSHA
  • Emotional intelligence, sensitivity to others, and the ability to maintain one’s composure in a dynamic, fast-paced, deadline driven environment

The anticipated salary for this position is $56,000 - $95,000 annually, based on experience. In addition to competitive salary, Stevenson provides a comprehensive benefits package and resources to support advanced degree work and professional development including professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel. Medical plan benefits include PPO and HSA options offered by Anthem with generous premium coverage provided by the School. Dental and vision plans as well as an FSA program are also available.
